Tourism Concern, known globally as the charity that fights for the rights of those exploited by the travel industry, may have to close its doors as early as this Christmas (Full article here). The group needs at least 40,000 pounds to continue operation, (70,000 AUD) which is a big ask. Personally, I don’t see how we could afford not to have an organization like Tourism Concern looking out for those negatively affected by the industry we know and love.
Majority of tourism ventures that cause harm to the environment or the native inhabitants do so because neither were considered in the development stage. Tourism Concern gives a voice to those with the most to lose from over development and poor working conditions at key points in this process, giving them both the tools and the guidance to make themselves heard.
